If you are celebrating 25 or 50 years of marriage during the year of 2010 you will receive a certificate from the Archbishop. There are forms for you to complete in the transition area and return by mail or drop in the collection basket by March 1st. You will receive a special invitation to the Mass celebrated on May 1st if you are celebrating your 50th anniversary.

BULLETIN ADVERTISEMENTS
Jim Mazza representing Diocesan Publications (our Bulletin Publisher) will be calling on our current advertisers to renew and to seek new ads. We feel this is an excellent service and that the sponsors get good coverage with their ads. THANKS TO YOU and DIOCESAN PUBLICATIONS, the bulletin is published weekly at no cost to the parish.

VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED at Prince of Peace School. Call Ernie Rolfes at 231-4767 for details.

DISPENSATIONS ???
Pastors often receive requests from parishioners asking to be dispensed from fast and abstinence for particular social occasions. Of course, it is precisely on such occasions that the self-denial of fast and abstinence might be most meaningful. Such a dispensation is not a pastor’s to give. The Church tells us that in this matter individuals have freedom to excuse themselves but that, no Catholic will lightly hold himself/herself excused from so hallowed an obligation as this penitential practice.

YOUTH GROUP MEETING! There will be a meeting of the Youth Group this evening from 7 – 8:30 pm. All youth in grades 7-12 are invited to participate.

SNOW EMERGENCY! There will be NO WEEKDAY MASS on any day that Forest Hills Schools are closed or delayed because of snow.

OUR PARISH WEB SITE
Have you visited our parish web site recently? Take a look. You will find there a link to an inspiring video clip from Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, on the earthquake in Haiti. There is also a link to the Bishops Committee on Divine Worship web site that has both the daily Mass scripture readings, as well as a reflection on them for every day. Go to www.sjfchurch.org and check it out.

WELCOME to the ELECT!
Last Sunday, the First Sunday of Lent was marked by the traditional Rite of Election in our local archdiocese, and dioceses throughout the world. Our own archdiocesan celebration included a total of four services, two in Cincinnati and two in Dayton. Approximately 1000 catechumens and candidates for full communion participated in the rite along with their sponsors, families and parishioners. An annual tally of church membership in the U.S. found gains by the Roman Catholic Church, the Mormon church and the Assemblies of God last year. The data was published in the latest Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches, released this month by the Nation al Council of Churches, based in New York.

Membership in the Catholic Church rose nearly 1.5 percent to more than 68 million, the largest denomination by far in the country. The church rebounded from a slight drop last year. Our own parish has no catechumens to welcome this Easter Vigil. However, it’s just the right time to begin preparing new participants for next year. If you are or know an adult interested in being baptized or welcomed into the Catholic Church from another Christian denomination, please be in touch with Aimee Baer or Father Steve in the near future.

THE MASS: WHAT DOES it MEAN and WHY DO WE DO WHAT WE DO?
This question will be answered as we invite you to join us when Fr. Larry Tensi discusses this topic on March 2nd and March 9th from 7:00 – 8:15 pm. These two evening sessions will help us to come to a deeper appreciation and understanding of our central Catholic Prayer of the Eucharist.

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL
Next weekend, March 6 and 7, will be Catholic Ministries Appeal commitment weekend here at St. John Fisher. We ask every Catholic household to participate. Every registered parish household should receive a letter this week from Archbishop Schnurr. Please bring your completed pledge card and pledge envelope to Mass next week or mail them to the Archdiocese in the envelope provided. Our parish goal this year is $17,400. Thank you!

LENTEN VESPERS will be sung on Sunday, March 7th at 7:30 pm in the chapel of Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary, 6616 Beechmont Ave. The service led by Fr. Kenneth Morman, will include psalms, hymns and canticles. Lenten Choral music will be sung by the Athenaeum Chorale. The public is invited to attend.

LAY PASTORAL MINISTRY PROGRAM
Explore God’s call in your life. Discover the richness of Catholic Tradition. Earn a Certificate or Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry. The Athenaeum of Ohio Lay Pastoral Ministry Program is officially sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Join us for a free meeting outlining all aspects of the LPMP. March 11th, 7 pm at The Athenaeum, 6616 Beechmont Ave. Applications are now being accepted for Fall enrollment at the main campus. 231-1200.

LENTEN REMINDERS – FAST and ABSTINENCE
Good Friday, April 2, will be a day of abstinence from meat and also a day of fast, that is, limited to a single full meal. The other Fridays of the season of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics 14 years and older. The law of fasting binds all Catholics from their 18th birthday until their 59th birthday.
